Now that Fall is here in full swing, the days are becoming shorter and shorter each day. On top of that, the temperature is starting to go down! With the seasons changing, we need to adjust the way we use our decks. Rather than abandoning that investment, we’ve compiled a quick list of low-cost ways you can extend the deck season.

Brighten Up Your Deck

Because the sun goes down quicker, it’s a great idea to implement a new lighting system to your deck. Here are a few tips that’ll get your new lighting system up and running:

  • Buy multiple shepherd’s hooks (these are designed for deck railings)
  • Purchase a few light stings and run them from the house to the shepherd’s hooks
  • Light string with 1″ bulbs are crowd favorites (but don’t exclude Christmas lights!)

Keep Your Company Warm

One of the biggest concerns for building a deck is the cold weather. In their mind, many people think they won’t go outside if it’s cold. Fortunately, there are options available if you want to enjoy your deck during the colder months. First would be adding a fire pit. While this is the more expensive options (with prices ranging from a few hundred dollars up), it also allows for more options and benefits. The natural warmth and glow of a fire pit encourages great conversation and story-sharing.

An additional, more cost-effective option for keeping your outdoor guests warm, is investing in a patio heater. Same idea as a fire pit here. More people will gather around the heater, which results in a great time and even better memories!

Include Some New Technological Additions

We’re not encouraging you to turn away from the company you invited over, but adding new forms of entertainment for your guests can make the experience so much better. One popular idea is adding a TV to your deck. Because technology is better than ever, the options for TVs (especially those that could be used outside) are as affordable as they’ve ever been. On top of that, they can easily be connected to your home’s wi-fi. You could go the more luxurious route (waterproof TV, extra cable box, etc.), or you could buy a regular TV and move it inside and outside, as needed.
